Taylor Dam Fun Camp 2010

We had a great time at our annual Taylor Dam Fun Camp. How fun was it? It was Taylor Dam Fun!

We went to the football game and watched as Snowflake played a good first half. mmmmm We won't mention the second half.

Due to heavy rains our campsite was unusually wet and we had to four-wheel in. But, all in all the boys had fun. They got to stay up late on Friday and play in the mud in the morning.

Troop 7706 Update Feb 21, 2010
Thanks to the scouts for helping set up for the Silver Creek District Adult Recognition Dinner last Wednesday after we played dodge ball.

Upcoming Events:
• We have our regular scout meeting on Wednesday’s at 7pm at the church.
• March 13th: Merit Badge Clinic at the Centennial Blvd building 8 to Noon.
• March 26th: Campout and hike. This is our annual troop camp on the Friday night of spring break. Last year we made this a two night camp leaving on Thursday. If we can do the same this year, we’ll try.
• April 10th. Jamborama. This is a statewide event for all scouts in Arizona to celebrate 100 years of scouting.. We’ll be driving to Chandler for the Day Long Activity at Tumbleweed Park.
• Camp Geronimo: July 3rd through July 10.

• Other Hikes and Camps as determined in

POPCORN SALES ARE OVER

We are done selling popcorn. Our sales this year were less than half of the sales from last year. But, every bit will help towards camp. I've divided out the profit and it works out to about $5.30 per hour per boy that they will have to help towards camp fees. I really appreciate each boy and leader who helped with this effort.

We had our annual Taylor Dam fun camp this last Friday. We went to the foot ball game and stayed up late and just had fun. The boys enjoyed playing in the cool water, swinging on the rope swing and just being together making each other laugh.

Baptisms for the Dead this Tuesday the 22nd. Meet at the church at 5:30. Wear attire for the temple and make sure you have your temple recommend. If you have lost your recommend come early so that you can meet with the bishop.

We are selling popcorn again this year. We are taking pre-orders, and will be selling at local stores, on Saturdays. Boys who participate in selling popcorn will be have their fee’s for Camp Geronimo reduced.

Fall Camporee, Oct 16-17. This will be at Camp Silver Creek this year. We’ll be leaving from the church at 5:30 and coming back to Snowflake about 3pm.

Vernon Camp, October 30-31. This is a joint camp and hike with the Vernon Ward Scouts. We’ll be camping at the Los Burros Campground and hiking the Los Burros Trail on Saturday. This will likely be a cold night, so prepare now.

Order of the Arrow. The Ceremony Team has two Arrow of Light ceremonies this week to perform as a service to area Cub Packs. You can check the schedule at oanashernna.blogspot.com . Several of the 6th ward boys are serving on the ceremony team.

Order of the Arrow elections were held for the our Silver Creek District’s OA Chapter leaders ship positions. Several of the 6th Ward boys will be serving one year terms. For those who don’t know, the Order of the Arrow is the Honor Society of Scouting and is a service based national organization. The new OA leaders are listed on the OA page.

POPCORN SALES

Once again we'll be selling popcorn to raise money during September and October to help scouts pay for scout camp. This year, we'll be able to pre-sell orders and show and sell at Bashas and Ed's. Last year we were able to take $100 off of the price of Camp Geronimo per boy who helped sell popcorn. Hopefully we'll do even better this year.

This year the boy's will be elibible to earn prizes from Trails End popcorn for selling. There are lots of great prizes available.

From what we've been told, our troop is the ONLY troop in Snowflake and Taylor that has agreed to sell this year. This gives us more people to ask to buy. I'll be giving the boys the information that they need and we'll be able to get started.

Court of Honor

We had a great Court of Honor this past Sunday. About 100 merit badges were handed out together with several rank advancements. Jared and Alex were awarded their Eagle Awards. Congratulations to Jared and Alex. We have several other boys soon to be Eagles as well. We had about 80 people in attendance at the court of honor and the boys all did a great job. Wendy Foree did a great job with the cookies and fruit cup refreshments. Thanks to everyone who made the court of honor an event to be remembered.

Carter Johnson was the master of ceremonies and Dave Ashton did his usual great job of keeping everything straight and on plan. Badges from Camp Geronimo and Camp Raymond were given out. The awards handed out a too many to list here. Scouting leaders, Will Rose, Mark Foree, and Travis Tenney handed out the awards. Our troop is active and doing well.

Raymond (Silver Creek District Camp 2009)

We had a good time at Raymond. It was a different experience for a summer camp than our boys are used to. The schedule of merit badge classes was more open (unscheduled) and our boys are used to more structure. They enjoyed their free time and still added to their merit badge count.

We have a change in our Deacon's Quorum presidency and thus our Scout Troop. Hunter is now Senior Patrol Leader, Nick and Todd are Assistant SPLs, and Chandler is scribe.

Our boys were the OA ceremony team for the Order of the Arrow inductions at camp. Our camp site was awarded the ribbon for most improved camp.

Scout Pioneer Day Pancake Breakfast.

We had our first annual pancake breakfast. Great thanks to Fred West, Jim Stradling, Mike Brewer who came with their grills and did the heavy work. Thanks to Scott Smith for arranging the social hall and making sure that we were ready to go. We earned about $400 towards our camp costs. Thanks to everyone who came by and had breakfast!

COURT OF HONOR SET FOR AUG 2

The date for the after camp Court of Honor which will also be an Eagle Court of Honor for Jared and Alex Foree is set for 6pm at the Relief Society Room.

CAMP GERONIMO 2009

We had a great time at Camp Geronimo. We took 20 boys to Geronimo an earned 65 merit badges and 15 partials. These merit badges will result in several rank advancements at the next Court of Honor to be held in August. Also at Geronimo, we elected 8 boys to the Order of the Arrow and 6 advanced in the OA to Brotherhood level. The Order of the Arrow is the Boy Scouts of America Honor society and is organized as the cental service organizaton of scouting.

We left on Saturday June 27th and returned on Independence Day. On Friday night, Camp Geronimo conducted a special flag ceremony coordinated with 2 US Marines who work summers at camp. It was a poignant moment as each fold of the flag purpose was explained. The boy's were amply impressed.

We had one injury, (Alex smashed his toe), and a lot of fun. Camp Geronimo is always a boost to our scout spirit and our enthusiasm for scouting. Click on the slideshow at the right to see photos of the week long camp.

We have another camp coming up at Camp Raymond July 20-25. This is a Silver Creek District organized camp that is not part of our regular scouting schedule. We will be taking 10 or 11 boys and will be experiencing Camp Raymond for the first time.

We have several boys in the ward who are either new eagles awaiting their court of honor or are just now finishing up their eagle projects and packets. Stay tuned to announcements of Courts of Honors at church.

We have a wealth of great adult help in our ward. Special thanks for our success at Camp Geronimo goes to Paul Beatty, Scott Smith, Darrell Petersen, Will Rose, Bishop Peterson, and Dave Ashton.

Hunter's Report on our Survival Campout

On March 27th, we all gathered at the church to leave for our survival campout. Right when we arrived, it started snowing hard. So my Scoutmasters weren't sure if we should go. When we got to the camp, the weather was perfect! So we set up the fire and our forts. We had a camp fire ceremony at night, and the best story was how Rubon tongue-wrestled with a certain girl. He also included that they won even matches. After all of that laughing, we were exhausted and went to bed. The next morning, we went on a nature hike with the survivalist. On the way, we found cactus and ate it, then decided to build a BIG sweat-lodge. Then it started to get dark, so we played were-wolf, and went to bed in the sweat-lodge, and Rubon talked more about tongue wrestling with a couple of other girls. Then, went to bed. The next morning, we packed-up our things and left.
